17 gun salute as Raila Odinga laid to rest in Bondo

17 gun salute as Raila Odinga

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga received a 17-gun salute on Sunday at his family home in Bondo, Siaya County. The emotional ceremony carried both pride and reflection. It also marked the end of a powerful political era in Kenya. Raila’s burial began shortly before 5 p.m. Family members, close friends, and top government leaders gathered to honour his lifetime of service.

Meanwhile, Raila rests beside his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and his mother Mary Ajuma at Kang’o ka Jaramogi. Military officers handed the Kenyan flag to his widow, Ida Odinga, to honour his dedication to the nation. The gesture reflected respect, legacy, and a family deeply tied to Kenya’s democratic struggle.

Later, Ida joined her family and national leaders in laying wreaths at the graveside. Those present included President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Chief of Defence Forces Charles Kahariri, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi. Their presence showed unity across Kenya’s political divide. Moreover, it demonstrated shared respect for a leader who helped define the nation’s democratic path.

Raila, aged 80, died on Wednesday in India while receiving treatment. His family fulfilled his wish to be buried within 72 hours. Therefore, the ceremony reflected both honour and closure. It celebrated a visionary leader whose resilience, courage, and commitment left a lasting mark on Kenya’s democracy.
