Lawyer steps down from police brutality case, citing intimidation by online activists. A lawyer representing two Nairobi police officers accused of assault and attempted shooting has formally pulled out of the case. He cites a surge of threats reportedly linked to the online youth movement known as “Gen Z.”

Felix Keaton, who was defending officers Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono, announced on Wednesday that he had withdrawn from the high-profile case, expressing deep concern for the safety of himself and his family.

The officers, Barasa and Kiprono, captured on video allegedly attacking Boniface Kariuki, a street hawker in Nairobi—an incident that has sparked national outrage.

Keaton reported receiving over 1,000 threatening calls and messages urging him to withdraw from the case. “For the sake of my safety and that of my family, I’ve made the difficult but necessary decision to end my legal representation in this case,” he said.

He also disclosed that the threats were not limited to him—his family members are targeted with alarming messages as well.

The two officers are expected to appear in court later today.

Their case has come to symbolize the rising friction between police forces and an increasingly vocal online youth movement. The youth are pushing for justice, accountability, and an end to police violence. Lawyer steps down from police brutality case, citing intimidation by online activists.
