Mwiki residents held protests on Friday to demand justice. They reacted to the murder of 18-year-old Abigael Wina Wanjiku. Someone raped and stabbed her. Police found her body in her house on June 19.
Protesters blocked roads with stones and branches. They lit bonfires and demanded action. Police fired tear gas to scatter them.
During the chaos, police shot 19-year-old Joshua Steven Nderitu. He was running from tear gas when a bullet hit his head. He died on the way to the hospital.
A video shows a police officer aiming at protesters. The officer fires, then flees on a motorbike.
Witnesses said police caused the violence. They claimed the protest had been peaceful. One resident said, “We have videos. We want justice.”
The Mwiki community now demands arrests. They want justice for both Abigael and Joshua. They also want the officer in the video held responsible.
Residents accuse police of using force on peaceful protesters. They say this is not the first time.
Human rights groups joined the outcry. They urged IPOA to investigate the officer.
