Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, has died in a car crash in Spain. His younger brother, André Silva, 26, also died. Silva was a professional footballer.

The crash happened early on Wednesday, July 3, 2025. It occurred in Zamora province on the A-52 motorway. Spanish authorities said their Lamborghini veered off the road after a suspected tyre burst. It hit a barrier and caught fire. Both men died at the scene.

The accident came days after Jota’s wedding. He married Rute Cardoso on June 22. They have three children. The couple had just celebrated with close friends and family.

Jota joined Liverpool FC in 2020. He played 182 matches and scored 65 goals. He also earned nearly 50 caps for Portugal. Fans and teammates admired his hard work, versatility, and goal-scoring skills.

Tributes are pouring in. Liverpool FC expressed “profound sadness.” The Portuguese Football Federation called it a “devastating blow.” Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, and Piers Morgan also shared tributes.

The Portuguese Women’s Euro team will also hold a minute of silence to honour Jota.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing. Fans across the world are mourning. Jota was more than a footballer. He was a humble man with a big heart. The football world has lost a true talent and a kind soul.
