Machakos suspects skip Court over ‘Bad Beds’

Machakos suspects skip Court over ‘Bad Beds’. The Kangundo Law Court in Machakos County postponed a kidnapping case on Tuesday after the four suspects refused to appear for the hearing.

The accused reportedly cited poor sleeping conditions at Kangundo Police Station. They claimed the cells lacked proper mattresses and chose to remain at Machakos Prison instead.

The four suspects—Duncan Wambua Kimeu (a taxi driver), Dennis Ndolo Mutunga, Wambua Kinyili Mutunga, and Charles Mutinda Margaret—face charges of kidnapping and robbing Dr. Titus Kilika in June 2024.

Court officials had no choice but to adjourn the session following the suspects’ refusal to attend.

The incident has sparked concern about the state of police cells and basic detainee welfare, especially in ongoing cases.

Authorities are now expected to address the suspects’ claims before setting a new hearing date.

Principal Magistrate Sammy Opande directed OCS Samuel Mwangi of Kangundo Police Station to appear in court on July 29. The magistrate wants him to explain the poor sleeping conditions that caused the suspects to skip court.

Opande also dismissed a plea to reduce the Ksh.1 million bond for the first and second suspects.
