Emmanuel Wanyonyi stunned the crowd at the London Diamond League on Saturday evening. He clocked 1:42.00 to win the men’s 800m.
He held off a strong field. Canada’s world champion Marco Arop came second in 1:42.22. Britain’s Max Burgin thrilled fans with third in 1:42.36.
Moments later, his 18-year-old training partner Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech pulled off a shock victory in the men’s 1500m.
Koech ran 3:28.82, breaking the meeting record held by Hicham El Guerrouj since 2000. It was only his third-ever 1500m race.
He edged out world champion Josh Kerr, who finished second in 3:29.37. Portugal’s Isaac Nader placed third with 3:31.55.
Koech had first made headlines in Paris with a 3:27.72 run, setting a new World U20 record. He then confirmed his form in Ostrava.
Now, the rising star from Kewapmwai village in Uasin Gishu stands among the best in the world.
Both Wanyonyi and Koech train under coach Claudio Berardelli. Their success reflects Kenya’s growing strength in middle-distance running.
The duo will race in the Tokyo 2025 World Championships Kenya trials. The event will take place at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Tuesday, July 22.
Kenya now looks forward to seeing these stars shine even brighter on the global stage.
