Nairobi City Stars, a team that competed in the Kenyan Premier League last season, has officially shut down.
Team coordinator Samson Otieno confirmed that club owner Jonathan Jackson made the decision after the team dropped from the top tier. Otieno said the owner invested heavily but felt disappointed by the lack of results.
Jackson believed the City Stars project was not taking the shape he envisioned. Otieno explained that players received warnings about the looming disbandment in June, shortly after the season ended. On June 12, the club issued official communication dismissing all players and the entire technical bench.
Otieno expressed frustration over the team’s poor performance. He said the players had all the support they needed yet failed to deliver. In his view, the squad lacked seriousness.
The club owner chose to channel his resources into other ventures. He even said he would rather invest in building basketball courts than keep funding a non-productive entity.
City Stars dropped to the National Super League (NSL) after finishing bottom of the 18-team FKF Premier League last season. Their exit now leaves the NSL with 18 teams instead of 19. The Football Federation has yet to confirm whether it will replace them in the 2025/2026 season.
The Nairobi side suffered relegation from the KPL in 2016. They later earned promotion back to the FKF Premier League at the end of the 2019/2020 season, which ended early due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This decision ends the journey of Nairobi City Stars, a club whose history in Kenyan football has included moments of triumph and deep setbacks.
