Former deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has ended his US tour early. He is is set to return back home on Monday to prepare for Kenya’s by-elections.
Gachagua left for the US in the month of July and his goal was to meet Kenyans abroad and build stronger diaspora links. He toured cities such as Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, and Baltimore.
On August 14, he announced his early return. He said he needed to focus on the November 27 by-elections. The vote will fill vacant seats in several counties.
During the trip, Gachagua hosted town halls and fundraising dinners. Some events faced criticism for high entry fees. Others saw poor turnout or were cancelled. Still, he said the tour allowed him to hear from the diaspora directly.
He promised to complete the remaining US visits in early 2026. He apologised for the changes and thanked supporters for their patience.
Gachagua also made a serious claim during the trip. He said over 40 National Intelligence Service officers followed him in the US. He called it worrying but gave no more details.
Now back in Kenya, Gachagua will rest briefly before hitting the campaign trail. His priority is to rally support for his Democratic Citizens Party in the by-elections.
His return highlights the high political stakes ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts believe the by-elections will test his party’s influence.
The move has stirred debate in Kenya and among the diaspora. Many are watching to see if it boosts his standing or exposes weaknesses.
