Somali Clashes Drive Thousands Into Mandera

Clashes in Gedo have pushed at least 2,289 Somalis into Mandera since July 21, the Kenya Red Cross says. “We have set up two evacuation sites holding over 2,000 people,” County Coordinator Adan Mustafa said. Barwaqo and Duse primary schools now serve as shelters.

Most refugees are women, children and people with disabilities. They need water, food, medicine, mosquito nets, and blankets. Mr Mustafa urged for tighter security along the border and at evacuation sites.

The Red Cross is providing psychosocial support. Mandera Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa promised safety for residents and refugees. He said the border remains closed to stop Al-Shabaab fighters from crossing.

Security officials say the fighting is undermining peace in Gedo and nearby areas. Mogadishu blames Jubaland for militia attacks on army bases and civilians in Bula Hawa.

Refugees like Hawa Aden and Halima Ali spoke of losing homes and livelihoods. Shells have landed in Mandera, damaging houses. Federal troops now claim control of Bula Hawa.
