Govt to Shift National Archives Over Security Risks

National Archives to Relocate from Nairobi CBD

The government will relocate the Kenya National Archives from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). Officials say the move follows recent protests that exposed security risks to the historic site.

Authorities disclosed that protesters tried to torch the building during youth-led demonstrations. The government now fears the landmark could face similar threats in the future.

Gender and Culture Principal Secretary Ummi Bashir confirmed the plan on Thursday, August 21. She said the Archives would shift to a safer and quieter area. The new location will also improve access for researchers, students, and the public.

“The Kenya National Archives is a national treasure,” Bashir said. “This move will protect its assets and make access easier.”

The Archives, founded in 1965, holds millions of documents, photographs, and records. For decades, it has served as a research hub and a cultural attraction in Nairobi’s CBD.

Officials noted that the central location boosted visibility but increased vulnerability during unrest. Relocation will safeguard the collections and provide modern facilities for preservation.

The government has not revealed the new site. Bashir said the new facility will include research spaces, better parking, and stronger security.

The decision marks a major shift for one of Kenya’s most iconic institutions. Many will view it as the end of an era for the CBD landmark. Still, the government insists the move is vital to protect history and ensure the future of national heritage.
