Government Assures Kenyans of Transparency in SHIF

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale assured Kenyans that all Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) contributions will go to healthcare. He emphasized that no money will be lost to fraud or misuse.

This comes after a social media report claimed the Social Health Authority (SHA) gave Ksh.20 million to a non-existent hospital in Homa Bay. However, SHA dismissed the claim. It explained that Nyandiwa Dispensary, now Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital, is active and serving the public.

Therefore, Duale stressed that every shilling must go to legitimate services. He noted that the government will keep the fund transparent and accountable. Furthermore, he reminded Kenyans that health is a right, and SHIF contributions must directly benefit citizens.

In addition, the CS said the government is publishing the list of facilities paid by SHA. He explained that this is not a legal requirement but a measure to build trust. Moreover, he said the move aims to assure Kenyans that their money is safe.

Meanwhile, Duale noted that the ministry is working with oversight agencies to block corruption. He highlighted audits, data checks, and inspections as part of ongoing efforts.

The SHIF, which replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), is central to the government’s universal healthcare plan. Consequently, it is expected to improve access to medical services for millions of households.

Finally, Duale urged Kenyans to support the new system. He encouraged them to report any suspicious activities. He concluded that accountability will make SHIF stronger and guarantee better healthcare for all.
