A huge fire broke out on Tuesday evening in Tassia Estate, Embakasi East, Nairobi. The blaze started in one of the informal houses and spread quickly to nearby homes. Houses built with wood and iron sheets went up in flames within minutes.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident and sent emergency teams to the scene. Firefighters from the Nairobi Fire Department joined efforts to stop the fire. Residents rushed to save what they could as the flames swept through the settlement.
Witnesses linked the fire to a gas explosion, but officials have not confirmed the cause. No casualties had been reported by the time of response. Several families, however, lost their homes and belongings.
The incident adds to a series of fires in Tassia this year. In August, a night fire killed a seven-month-old baby. In March, another blaze in Kwa Kassim injured six people and destroyed homes.
Residents say they fear more fires. Many houses still use unsafe stoves and faulty wiring. Community leaders are asking the government to step in as families sleep in the cold after losing everything.
