Why Air Cargo is Africa’s Next Economic Lifeline

Why Air Cargo is Africa’s Next Economic Lifeline

Africa has long struggled with costly, unreliable logistics. Yet air cargo is unlocking a new path to growth.

To begin with, air cargo is not just about moving boxes. It is transforming Africa’s economy. It plays a key role for small and medium-sized businesses. Although often overlooked, its impact is huge. Across Kenya and the continent, fast and reliable transport can make or break a business.

For this reason, SMEs and MSMEs rely on air cargo to cut delays and open markets.

Budget airlines are stepping up. They now carry up to 1.2 tonnes of cargo per flight. More flights mean better reliability. They drive smoother trade and stronger local economies. Coastal towns link with inland cities. This is especially vital for perishables and high-value goods. In cargo, time is money.

Furthermore, routes like Nairobi–Lamu and Mombasa–Kisumu remain untapped. They hold huge potential. On a global scale, air cargo moves less than 1% of trade volume. Yet, it handles 33% of trade value. That equals $8.3 trillion each year. As a result, better air links raise trade by up to 6%. No wonder JKIA won Africa’s Cargo Airport of the Year 2024.

At the same time, Eldoret Airport’s runway upgrade changes the game. Farmers and cooperatives can now export directly. Consequently, prosperity spreads beyond Nairobi.

In addition, air cargo meets vital needs. It delivers vaccines and medicines through advanced cold-chain systems. Moreover, e-commerce growth boosts small-parcel demand. Regional carriers stand ready to capture this market.

Ultimately, the message is clear. Aviation is essential infrastructure.
