Kenya honoured the late Raila Amolo Odinga as a national hero during Mashujaa Day in Kitui County. His name topped the Lifetime Achievement Special Recognition list. The government praised him for his fight for democracy, reforms, and unity.
His recognition came just days after his burial. The late opposition leader spent decades pushing for change. His legacy shaped Kenya’s democracy. His honour showed the nation’s gratitude.
The celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium also recognised over 160 other heroes. Musician Paul Julius Nunda, known as Jua Cali, received an award for his impact on music. He helped pioneer genge sound and became a cultural icon.
Citizen TV journalist Mwanahamisi Hamadi was also celebrated for empowering women. Her media work has inspired many.
Veteran politician Martha Karua was honoured for defending constitutionalism and gender equality. She has long been a strong voice for justice and the rule of law.
The state also paid tribute to Mwai Kibaki, Daniel arap Moi, and Wangari Maathai. Their work continues to shape Kenya’s history.
This year’s honours covered 14 categories. They included liberation, entrepreneurship, human rights, arts, indigenous knowledge, sports, and conservation. The National Heroes Council vetted all honourees under the National Heroes Act 2014.
The 2025 Mashujaa Day theme was courage, innovation and service. President William Ruto urged Kenyans to honour those who shaped the nation. He however called for unity to build on their legacy.
Raila’s inclusion reminded many of his lifelong struggle for a better Kenya. His name now stands among the country’s most celebrated heroes.
