The 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) officially began on Monday across the country. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed full readiness for a smooth and transparent exam period.
Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok opened exam papers at Kibra DC on Monday morning. He said the ministry had completed all necessary preparations to ensure the exams run smoothly.
“We are fully ready for the KPSEA and KJSEA exams. This year, 1.1 million KJSEA learners will move to Grade 10,” Prof. Bitok said.
He added that education stakeholders — teachers, supervisors, and administrators — are working closely together. Their goal is to ensure fair and credible exams. “All learners and exam centers are ready,” he stated.
Prof. Bitok also said the government released all required funds for the exercise. He urged teachers, supervisors, and invigilators to act with integrity and professionalism.
“No one should claim a lack of support,” he said. “Every officer has what they need. Our schools are prepared to host Grade 9 learners moving to Grade 10.”
Exam Readiness
KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to a successful exam season. He said the exams will follow the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) system.
“In the CBC system, learners take assessments in Grades 4, 7, and 8,” Njengere explained. “Grade 9 learners already have 40% of their marks, and these exams will complete the remaining 60%.”
He also assured parents, teachers, and learners that KNEC will deliver credible exams. More than 3.4 million students are sitting for the national assessments this year.
The start of KPSEA and KJSEA follows the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, which began on October 21, 2025. This marks another major step in Kenya’s shift from the 8-4-4 education system to the CBC model.
According to KNEC, KPSEA exams will run from October 27 to 29, while KJSEA exams will continue from October 27 to November 3, 2025.
