The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has approved Dr. Oburu Odinga as its new party leader. The move follows the death of Raila Odinga, who led the party for more than 20 years.
ODM’s National Governing Council (NGC) met in Nairobi and endorsed Oburu’s leadership. The decision was made following recommendations from the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Central Management Committee (CMC). Party officials said the change ensures stability and unity. They added that it followed wide consultations among ODM members across the country.
Oburu, the elder brother of the late Raila Odinga, had been serving as acting party leader. His confirmation by the NGC now makes him the official head of ODM.
After the endorsement, Oburu thanked the party for its trust. He promised to carry on Raila’s legacy and defend ODM’s values. “We must continue the work Raila started,” he said. “Our goal remains a fair and also prosperous Kenya.” He urged members to stay united and avoid divisions. He said ODM must focus on rebuilding and preparing for the 2027 elections.
A New Leadership Era for ODM
ODM leaders praised Oburu’s long political experience. Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the appointment followed the party’s constitution. He described Oburu as a calm and steady leader who understands ODM’s journey and future.
During the meeting, the NGC also made other leadership changes. It announced that Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Nominated MP John Osotsi were approved as Deputy Party Leaders. Vice Chairpersons Dr. Ariko Namoit and Dr. Otiende Amollo were also confirmed.
Oburu said teamwork and inclusivity will guide his leadership. He called on members to rebuild the party’s strength and expand its reach nationwide. “ODM belongs to all Kenyans,” he said. “We must protect it and move forward together.” The endorsement marks ODM’s first major leadership change since its formation in 2005.
Political observers view Oburu’s rise as both symbolic and also strategic. It preserves the Odinga family legacy while positioning ODM for renewal. His leadership will focus on unity, party organization, and alliance building.
ODM is also preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Party insiders say the milestone will highlight ODM’s resilience and long-standing role in shaping Kenya’s democracy. Oburu’s appointment opens a new chapter for the party. His challenge will be to hold ODM together, maintain its national image, and prepare for the next election.
