Abdi Mohamed is now the Chair of the UN Global Compact Network Kenya Board. He also serves as the CEO and MD of Absa Bank Kenya PLC. His appointment took effect on July 4, 2025. Previously, Martin Ochien’g held the position.
Meanwhile, Jane Karuku has been named Vice Chair. She is the Group MD and CEO of East African Breweries Limited (EABL). She takes over from Kariuki Ngari. Together, their appointments mark a fresh chapter for the Network’s leadership.
As Kenya’s chapter of the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, the Network helps companies align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With years of experience, Mohamed brings strong leadership and banking knowledge. He has pledged to strengthen private sector efforts in driving sustainable practices.
In addition, the Board welcomed three new members. Tom Gitogo joins from Britam Holdings PLC. Dr. Toseef Din represents MP Shah Hospital. Mary‑Ann Musangi joins from Haco Industries.
At the same time, two members were re-elected. Sheila Masinde returns from Transparency International Kenya. Jonathan Van Zeller continues from Alamaya Group. Both will serve for another three years.
Overall, the new appointments show the Network’s commitment to ethical leadership and inclusive growth. Moreover, the board now includes expertise from finance, healthcare, and manufacturing.
Looking ahead, Mohamed and Karuku aim to expand the Network’s impact. They plan to guide companies on climate, governance, labour rights, and anti-corruption.
Ultimately, this transition reflects a stronger resolve to support Kenya’s path toward the global 2030 sustainability agenda.
