Boniface Kariuki, Shot by Police During Protest, Confirmed Dead

Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, the hawker shot by police during protests in Nairobi, is dead. His family confirmed his death on June 30, 2025, at 3:15 pm.

Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital switched off life support after confirming no brain activity. Kariuki had been in critical condition since June 17. A police officer shot him in the head at close range during anti-government protests.

On June 29, the hospital declared him brain-dead. His family had hoped for a miracle, but doctors confirmed there was no chance of recovery. Emily Wanjira, a family spokesperson, said they were devastated. “We have lost our brother,” she said. “He fought for days, but today he left us.”

Kariuki was 22 years old. He sold masks in the streets of Nairobi to support his family. His death has sparked renewed anger over police violence. Two officers linked to the shooting were arrested on June 19. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is still investigating. The officers face possible murder charges.

The family’s hospital bill has passed Ksh 3 million. Civil society groups have called for public support and accountability. Rights activists and opposition leaders condemned the shooting. They accused the government of failing to control rogue officers. Kariuki’s death adds to the growing list of protest victims. At least 16 people have died in recent demonstrations. Most were young and unarmed. The family is now preparing for burial arrangements. They say they want justice, not just condolences.

The protests began after the death of blogger Albert Ojwang’ on June 8. Many fear more lives will be lost if police brutality continues unchecked. Kenyans are demanding answers, accountability, and change.
