Boniface Mwangi sues Tanzania for ksh130m

Boniface Mwangi sues Tanzania for ksh130m. Human rights activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire have sued the Tanzanian government. They filed the case at the East African Court of Justice, supported by seven civil society organizations.

They accuse Tanzanian authorities of serious human rights violations. The allegations include torture, enforced disappearance, illegal detention, sexual abuse, and unlawful deportation.

Each petitioner seeks at least USD 1 million (approximately KSh 130 million) in compensation. The group also demands public apologies from the governments of Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.

Beyond financial compensation, the activists want rehabilitation and psychological support. They believe the entire ordeal was meant to intimidate and silence them.

Boniface Mwangi released a statement condemning the experience. He called it “evil” and emphasized their refusal to remain silent.

“We won’t stay quiet. This was meant to break us, but we’re standing strong,” Mwangi said. “We’re going to court to demand justice and expose what happened in the dark.”

In May, Mwangi and Atuhaire traveled to Tanzania to observe the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Unknown individuals abducted them from their hotel in Dar es Salaam.

The abductors took them to the Immigration Department and then to the Central Police Station. Later, they moved them to a secret location where they endured torture and sexual abuse.

After the abuse, the attackers dumped Mwangi at the Kenya border and deported Atuhaire to Uganda. Neither activist received an explanation for the detention or deportation.

They now seek justice in court. Their goal is to hold the responsible governments accountable and ensure such violations don’t happen again.
