Chebet and Kipyegon lead team Kenya. Olympic champions Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, and Emmanuel Wanyonyi will spearhead Kenya’s team at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025.

Athletics Kenya unveiled a powerful 58-member squad following national trials held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex. The federation is confident the selected athletes will shine at the global event, set for September 13 to 21 in Tokyo.

Kenya hopes to improve its medal haul from the 2023 World Championships, where the country secured 11 medals—five gold, two silver, and four bronze—finishing second overall behind the United States in Oregon.

A major highlight of the trials was the women’s 4x400m relay team, which broke the national record. The team, made up of Esther Mbagari, Mercy Adongo, Lanoline Aoko, and World 800m champion Mary Moraa, clocked 3:27.50, smashing the previous record of 3:28.02 by 1.48 seconds.

Meanwhile, rising star Faith Cherotich, who bagged bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics, impressed again. She expressed confidence ahead of her first World Championships.

“I’ll sit down with my coach and work on improving even further before Tokyo,” said Cherotich after a strong finish.

She will join Doris Lemngole and Pamela Koskei in flying Kenya’s flag in the women’s steeplechase.

The selected athletes reflect Kenya’s depth and growing dominance in middle and long-distance events. With both experienced names and emerging talents, the country is positioning itself as a serious contender in Tokyo.

Athletics Kenya remains optimistic that this squad will bring glory and add to the nation’s rich history in global athletics.
