Grieving families will hold a peaceful protest on June 25. The date marks a year since anti-government protests claimed over 60 lives, most of them Gen Z youth.
They accuse President Ruto and top officials of making empty promises. Leaders pledged justice, but nothing has happened.
The protest will recall the day demonstrators stormed Parliament. That action forced the President to withdraw a tax Bill and dismiss his Cabinet.
Among the victims was Kennedy Odhiambo. His mother, Jacinta Ochieng, says President Ruto called her. He promised justice for her son. One year later, she still waits.
During this year’s Madaraka Day, she rose near the podium to seek the President’s attention. She says his silence pushed her to speak out.
On Friday, she joined other mothers at the August 7 Memorial Park. They gave notice of the planned protest. Many wept while holding photos of their children. They spoke of pain and loss.
The families now demand accountability. They want the President to admit what happened. Also, they call for the arrest of officers involved and urgent police reforms. They requested protection during the march.
“This will be a peaceful protest,” they stated. “Any violence from police will deepen the wound.”
The group plans to lay flowers at the sites where their children were killed. They will also deliver a memorandum to Parliament and the President’s office.
Some parents now live in poverty. Others battle illness brought on by grief. They say their lives have never been the same.
