The Ministry of Education has set a standard fee of KSh53,554 for students joining senior secondary schools under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Education Cabinet Secretary Julias Migos Ogamba said the move promotes fairness and transparency. He noted that the new directive ensures all schools charge the same amount as Kenya advances in education reforms.
The standard fee will apply mainly to boarding students. Learners in day schools will continue to receive full government capitation. Parents with children in day schools will therefore not pay extra tuition fees.
The KSh53,554 fee covers tuition, boarding, meals, activity, and maintenance costs. The government designed the amount to include all essential services under one package.
Ogamba said the government remains committed to affordable and accessible education. He added that the ministry will continue to offer subsidies to reduce the burden on families.
He warned school administrators against charging unauthorized levies. Ogamba said such actions go against government policy. The ministry will monitor schools closely to ensure full compliance with the new rules.
The CBC aims to equip learners with practical and creative skills. It also prepares them for higher education and future careers.
Education officials said the uniform fee will promote equality and financial fairness across all senior schools. They believe the plan will give every learner an equal chance to access quality education regardless of background.
