Gov’t Allocates Ksh2.5B, Urges UASU to Call Off Strike

The National Treasury released Ksh2.5 billion for Phase Two of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) in public universities. The funds will cover salary adjustments for lecturers and staff.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba urged the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) to withdraw its seven-day strike notice issued last week. He said the government remains committed to honoring all agreements under the Return-to-Work Formula.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga said the government has failed to fully implement the CBAs. He noted that arrears now total Ksh3.27 billion. He warned that lecturers will suspend teaching in public universities if the government fails to clear the pending amount.

Forty-one universities signed the strike notice dated September 10, 2025. The union accused the state of ignoring a court directive to allocate more funds for CBAs.
