Has AFC Leopards Tilted the Balance Against Gor Mahia?

The 98th Mashemeji Derby ended with AFC Leopards defeating Gor Mahia 1-0 at Nyayo National Stadium. Thousands of fans packed the stands. The match left supporters and pundits questioning whether the rivalry is shifting. The victory highlighted Leopards’ tactical discipline and Gor Mahia’s shortcomings.

Akonnor Apologises and Calls for Aggression

Gor Mahia’s coach, Charles Akonnor, apologized to fans after the defeat. “I am deeply sorry that we lost because this match meant a lot to me as a coach in my career,” he said. He urged his players to show more aggression, especially in midfield. “They are not aggressive enough to win the balls. That is creating a lot of problems for us. We must be aggressive, keep the ball, and win. That is our style,” he added.

The loss compounded Gor’s recent woes, coming just after a 4-1 defeat to APS Bomet. It also denied K’Ogalo the chance to reclaim the league lead in the 18 team Premier League. Gor now has 19 points from 10 matches, one behind Kenya Police, who have 20 points from the same number of games. AFC Leopards sit sixth with 17 points from 10 matches. Akonnor identified midfield weaknesses as a major issue. He said the players must fight harder for the ball and control the game to restore the team’s style.

Leopards Shine, Masaba Scores Winner

AFC Leopards’ coach Fred Ambani praised his team’s preparation. The postponed derby gave them extra time to train and analyze Gor Mahia’s tactics. Forward Julius Masaba scored the decisive goal in the 25th minute. The goal followed Gor’s goalkeeper, Byrne Odhiambo, parrying a shot from Tyson Odhiambo. Masaba celebrated wildly, kicking the ball toward the fans. “I feel good. This is a result of hard work and belief from the coach,” he said.

Leopards dominated much of the match. Ambani maintained his unbeaten derby record as a coach, having guided the team to draws against Gor last season. Yesterday’s victory gave Leopards their 29th win in Mashemeji Derby history. Gor has 33 wins, while 36 matches ended in draws.

The match was also emotionally significant. It was the first derby since the passing of Gor’s former patron, the late Raila Odinga, on October 15. Gor players honored him by wearing t-shirts with his image on the pitch.

Mashemeji Derby 98 showed the intensity and passion of Kenyan football. Leopards’ victory may signal a shift in the rivalry. Gor Mahia must strengthen their midfield, increase aggression, and improve tactics. If they do, K’Ogalo can reclaim dominance in future derbies. For now, AFC Leopards have proven they can compete and triumph on derby day, keeping the rivalry as exciting as ever.
