The government declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday. The day honors the late Raila Amolo Odinga, a veteran opposition leader and a key figure in Kenya’s history.
On Wednesday evening, the Interior Cabinet Secretary announced the decision. He urged Kenyans to reflect on Odinga’s legacy. In addition, the government encouraged the public to gather peacefully and join national memorial events.
Earlier this week, Odinga died at the age of 80 while receiving treatment in India. His death caused deep sorrow across the country. Furthermore, leaders from around the world sent tributes. Many described him as a fearless reformist who shaped Kenya’s democracy for decades.
Today at 8:30 a.m., a Kenya Airways flight will bring Odinga’s body to Nairobi. A government team and family members traveled to India to accompany it. After arrival, officials will take the body to Lee Funeral Home. Later, they will transfer it to Parliament Buildings for public viewing between noon and 5 p.m.
In the evening, the body will move to his Karen home for a vigil. On Friday, thousands will gather at Nyayo National Stadium for a state funeral service.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto praised Odinga as a “patriot and a true statesman.” He said Odinga inspired many to fight for justice and a better Kenya. Flags will fly at half-mast until the burial. Across the country, churches and mosques will hold prayers.
The funeral program will continue through the weekend. On Saturday, mourners will view the body in Kisumu. On Sunday, the country will lay Odinga to rest at his Bondo home. Finally, the government urged Kenyans to unite and honor his legacy.
