KNCHR reports 10 killed, dozens hurt in saba saba protest. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has condemned widespread violations reported during Monday’s Saba Saba demonstrations,. The use excessive police force, unlawful arrests, and fatal incidents across the country.
In a statement released Monday evening, KNCHR Vice Chair Dr. Raymond Nyeris revealed that by 6:30 p.m. The Commission had recorded 10 deaths, 29 injuries, 2 abductions, and 37 arrests across 17 counties.
The protests, organized to mark the 35th anniversary of Kenya’s 1990 pro-democracy movement, brought activity to a standstill in several towns as tensions flared between demonstrators and security forces.
The Commission further raised alarm over the continued disregard of a court order. He mandates that all officers deployed during protests be in uniform and clearly identifiable.
Instead, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) observed masked and unidentified individuals patrolling in unmarked vehicles in areas such as Nairobi, Kajiado, and Nakuru.
Even more troubling were reports of armed criminal gangs operating alongside police in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and Eldoret. These groups, allegedly armed with clubs, machetes, and bows and arrows, were said to have harassed and assaulted both protesters and members of the public.
KNCHR also strongly condemned an attack on the offices of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), where hired thugs reportedly assaulted staff and civilians present at the premises.
