Malava boys back for the Crown

Malava boys back for the Crown

Malava boys back for the Crown. Malava Boys High School are gearing up for a major comeback at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two Nationals set for July 27 to August 3 in Kakamega.

Head coach Shadrack Tovoko is confident his team will reclaim their lost volleyball glory. The Kakamega giants beat 2023 East Africa champions Namwela Boys in the Western region semi-finals before overcoming Butula Boys 3-2 in a thrilling final.

In the semis, Malava showed resilience. They edged out Namwela in five tense sets, denying the Bungoma-based team their usual dominance. It was the first time Namwela failed to defend the regional title since 2019.

Malava remains the only school from Western Kenya to win the national volleyball championship. They lifted the title five times—in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015, and 2018.

“We are aiming for the title because we carry the hopes of Western,” said Tovoko. “We are the only school in this region with national volleyball success. Playing at home gives us an extra boost.”

Tovoko credited their success to systems developed since 1999. He said the school focuses on talent growth and consistency.

“We have built a structure that develops players,” he added. “We know how to grow talent and form strong teams—even after top players graduate.”

As the tournament approaches, Tovoko emphasized the need for focus.

“We will approach every game like a final,” he said. “We respect our opponents and know the competition will be tough. That’s why we must be sharp in every department.”

Malava Boys enter the Nationals with experience, a winning legacy, and home support. All eyes are on them as they chase a sixth national title.
