Missing blogger Ndiang'ui Kinyagia

Missing blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia appears before Milimani Law Courts. Blogger and activist Ndiang’ui Kinyagia, who disappeared from his home in Kinoo, Kiambu County on June 22, made a surprise appearance at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Thursday. His return comes after weeks of public outcry and uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts.

Kinyagia’s lawyer, Wahome Thuku, explained that the activist went into hiding after learning that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were pursuing him over unclear allegations. Fearing for his safety, Kinyagia chose to remain in a safe location until he could confirm his security.

Thuku said Kinyagia reached out to a relative on Tuesday evening and expressed willingness to face the authorities so long as his safety assured “He is ready to cooperate with the DCI and appear before any court, provided his life is not in danger,” said Thuku. “That’s why we advised him to present himself before the High Court at Milimani today.”

Kinyagia’s sudden disappearance had sparked widespread concern, with human rights defenders demanding his whereabouts revealed and his rights respected.

Blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia resurfaced at the Milimani Law Courts wearing a maroon hoodie, face mask, and glasses. His family broke down in tears as they reunited with him.

Court Order

His disappearance had sparked public uproar, with many fearing it was another case of enforced disappearance targeting young government critics. A court had even ordered police to produce him.

However, the DCI denied any involvement, claiming they had no knowledge of his whereabouts. DCI boss Amin later confirmed Kinyagia was linked to an X account that shared a viral mock invitation to protests held in memory of last year’s anti-finance bill demonstrations. The image, posted on June 19, included Kenya’s coat of arms and a satirical event lineup, including a march to State House and a mock swearing-in.
