Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi told Parliament that Kenya remains a strong US ally. The country, he added, is at peace with all its neighbours.
He assured MPs that a proposed US Senate Bill does not threaten Kenya’s Major Non-NATO Ally status. Despite this, Kenya will keep its trade ties with Iran and Russia. Furthermore, he pointed out that Washington recently extended Kenya’s leadership of the UN-backed Haiti security mission. Mudavadi called the move a clear sign of trust between the two nations.
While addressing the National Assembly’s Regional Integration Committee, Mudavadi dismissed claims that ties with Tehran and Moscow had triggered a US probe. Instead, he denied any links to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces or Al-Shabaab. Moreover, he noted that Iran is a major buyer of Kenyan tea. He stressed that Kenya must keep seeking markets worldwide to protect its economy.
“These concerns came from one senator, not from the US government,” Mudavadi said. “Kenya is sovereign. We will work with any nation to protect our farmers, traders, and regional peace.”
In addition, he clarified that neither he nor President William Ruto had made official visits to Russia or Iran. He rejected suggestions of a shift in Kenya’s alliances. Looking ahead, with AGOA set to expire this year, he revealed that Nairobi is already in talks with Washington for a new trade deal.
