Former U.S. President Barack Obama delivered a heartfelt tribute to Kenya’s late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, calling him a true champion of democracy and a symbol of courage, unity, and reconciliation across Africa.
On Saturday, Obama released a statement celebrating Raila’s lifelong fight for justice, freedom, and good governance. He noted that Raila’s journey mirrored the struggles of many African nations striving for independence and democracy.
“Raila Odinga a true champion of democracy,” Obama said. “A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya.”
Furthermore, Obama reflected on personal moments when he witnessed Raila’s deep love for Kenya. He commended him for always choosing the nation’s peace and unity over personal ambition.
“Time and again, I saw him put his country first. Like few leaders anywhere, he always chose the path of reconciliation without betraying his values,” Obama added.
Democratic leadership
Additionally, Obama, who shares Kenyan roots through his late father, emphasized Raila’s significant role in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey. He said Raila’s leadership inspired not only Kenyans but also leaders around the world. Obama highlighted how Raila’s resilience, humility, and integrity continue to motivate generations across Africa and beyond.
“Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans but for people across the world. I know he will be deeply missed,” Obama said.
In conclusion, Obama extended warm condolences from himself and Michelle Obama. “Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya,” he said.
Raila Odinga, 80, died on October 15 in India while undergoing treatment. He will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, during a State burial in Kenya.
