President Ruto Leaves for Japan to Attend TICAD 9 Summit

President William Ruto leaves for Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama. The summit will run from August 20 to 22. It brings together African leaders, Japan, and global partners.

Ruto will deliver a keynote speech on August 20. His address will focus on digital public infrastructure, regional security, and sustainable growth. He will showcase Kenya’s leadership in technology, reforms, and climate action.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is part of the delegation. Other senior officials also joined the trip. Mr. Mudavadi has already met development partners. He discussed peace, governance, and economic stability ahead of the summit.

The visit follows Ruto’s state trip to Japan in February 2024. During that visit, he signed deals with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The agreements covered infrastructure, ICT, health, and research. He also met Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. The meetings reflected the growing partnership between Kenya and Japan.

Kenya aims to use TICAD 9 to boost trade and attract investment. The government also seeks support for innovation and infrastructure. It wants stronger ties in development cooperation.

TICAD started in 1993. It remains a key platform linking Africa and Japan. This year’s summit will focus on growth, peace, and digital transformation. It will also highlight sustainable development.

For Kenya, the event offers a chance to deepen recent diplomatic gains. It also strengthens the country’s role in shaping Africa’s development agenda.
