President William Ruto has pledged Kenya’s support for a new energy deal with Ethiopia. He spoke during the launch of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on September 9, 2025.
Ruto called the project a “monumental achievement” and a “pan-African statement.” He said the dam proves Africa can deliver major projects using its own resources.
Kenya currently imports 200 megawatts of hydropower from Ethiopia. The power flows through a 1,045-kilometer transmission line built in 2022.
Ruto confirmed Kenya will sign a new agreement to buy more electricity from Ethiopia.
The extra power will stabilize the national grid during droughts. It will also support industries, agribusiness, and technology hubs.
The plan will help Kenya reach 100 percent clean energy by 2030. Ruto urged Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan to manage the Nile fairly. He asked them to hold constructive talks to avoid conflict. The GERD is Africa’s largest hydroelectric project.
It will increase Ethiopia’s power exports to neighbors, including Kenya. The deal will cut electricity costs and boost reliability in Kenya. It will also strengthen regional trade and integration. Ruto said the partnership will drive economic growth and attract investors.
He believes clean, affordable energy will transform East Africa’s future. The GERD’s launch marks a new era for the region’s energy network.
