Safaricom Data Links Murangiri to CBD During Protests

Safaricom Data Links Murangiri to CBD During Protests.

A Safaricom officer testified in the inquest. It focused on the death of Rex Masai. He revealed mobile phone data. The data, however, placed police officer Isaiah Murangiri at key locations. The spots were in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). This happened during the protests under investigation.

The records show Murangiri’s number stayed active. This was on June 20, 2024. First, the signal appeared at St. Ellis House. It was between 11:20 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. Then, it stayed again to 6:21 p.m. Later, the same line appeared at Kencom.

“Between 15:39 and 21:20,” the officer said. “St. Ellis Site picked the number several times. This was apart from one record. That record, however, came at Kencom Site.”

The court also heard of another line. It was under Benson Thiru Kamau. In addition, it logged in at the KBC Tower. This happened from 5:00 p.m. on the same day. Meanwhile, a number under Michael Okello stayed silent. It showed no activity on June 19, 2024.

Murangiri is a suspect in the murder inquest. Earlier, he claimed that he had “seized” the number. The number in question, therefore, stayed disputed.

The court then asked about the line. Could it have stayed active in June 2023? The Safaricom officer, however, said more checks were needed. He explained he needed to verify the records.

He later confirmed the official records listed Murangiri. They showed him as the registered owner. This was at the time of the court order.

“On the 20th, the number was under Murangiri,” the officer said. “The line, therefore, was active on June 20, 2024.”
