Shoot them in the leg Ruto tells police

Shoot them in the leg,’ Ruto tells police. President William Ruto has instructed police officers to target the legs of individuals caught vandalizing property or looting during protests, rather than using lethal force.

Speaking on Wednesday during the launch of a police housing project in Kilimani, Nairobi, the President emphasized that while officers should not kill, they must act firmly against those who damage businesses and infrastructure.

“Anyone who sets fire to property or loots should be shot in the leg, treated in hospital, and taken to court,” Ruto stated. “Don’t take lives but break their legs. It’s wrong to destroy what others have worked hard for.”

The directive comes amid ongoing national protests, with increasing tension between demonstrators and law enforcement.

President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to unnamed political figures whom he accused of funding and influencing youth to engage in violent acts during ongoing protests.

Ruto warns

“It’s certain leaders financing these actions, and we’re coming for you,” he declared during a recent public address.

Ruto also labeled attacks on law enforcement and government property such as the incidents seen during the June 25 anti Finance Bill protests as acts of terrorism, vowing strict action against offenders.

“Anyone who targets our police officers or stations is waging war against the state. That is terrorism, and we will respond decisively. Kenya will not be ruled by fear or lawlessness not under my leadership,” he affirmed.

This comes amid a wave of countrywide demonstrations fueled by public frustration over the rising cost of living and alleged government repression. The protests many of them youth-led have seen multiple reports of fatalities, injuries, and alleged abductions.

Human rights groups and opposition figures have accused security forces of excessive brutality, including firing live bullets on unarmed protesters.
