WHO Warns of Rising Deaths as Progress on NCDs Stalls

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that progress in fighting non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is slowing. These include heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic lung illnesses.

Since 2020, progress has dropped sharply. As a result, NCDs now kill 43 million people each year. Eighteen million of these deaths occur before age 70.

Moreover, mental health is becoming a growing concern. One billion people worldwide live with mental health disorders. In addition, low- and middle-income countries suffer the most. They account for 75% of deaths linked to NCDs and mental health.

According to WHO, several factors are driving this slowdown. First, health budgets are shrinking. Next, economic and political crises strain governments. Finally, industries like tobacco and alcohol weaken policies through lobbying.

Even so, WHO says solutions are available. It calls them “Best Buys.” These include taxing harmful products and restricting ads to children. Furthermore, screening programs and better care for high blood pressure and cancer are essential.

With the right investment, progress is possible. Investing US$3 per person each year could save millions of lives. Additionally, it could generate US$1 trillion by 2030 in economic returns.

However, WHO warns that without urgent action, the world will miss Sustainable Development Goal 3.4. This goal seeks to cut premature NCD deaths by one-third by 2030. Missing it would result in more deaths, overburdened health systems, and rising costs.

Therefore, WHO urges governments to act now. They must increase funding, strengthen health systems, and focus on prevention.

Ultimately, the upcoming High-Level Meeting on NCDs offers nations a chance to renew commitments and accelerate action.
