Why Your Throat Feels Dry at Night

Why Your Throat Feels Dry at Night

Many people wake up at night with a dry throat. It can feel scratchy and uncomfortable. The problem is common and often not serious. It can still disturb your sleep.

Mouth breathing is a common cause. When you sleep with your mouth open, moisture escapes. Your throat becomes dry. Nasal congestion can make this worse. Allergies, a cold, or sinus issues can block your nose.

Dry air can also lead to a dry throat. A fan or air conditioner can reduce humidity in the room. If you are dehydrated, the dryness feels worse. Not drinking enough water during the day increases the problem.

Smoking and alcohol can irritate your throat. Some medications can cause dry mouth as a side effect. These include antihistamines and blood pressure drugs.

You can ease the dryness by drinking more water. A humidifier can help add moisture to the air. A saline spray can help clear a blocked nose. Avoid alcohol and smoking before bed.

If the problem happens often, it may signal sleep apnea or allergies. A doctor can help find the cause. Treating the cause can bring lasting relief.

A dry throat at night can interrupt your rest. Simple changes can make a big difference. Staying hydrated and improving air quality can help you sleep better.
