A family in Masewani Village, Kangundo Sub-county, Machakos County, is still recovering from a traumatic experience after their son’s burial turned chaotic.
Leonard Mutua Muema, popularly known as Mapetco, was only 24 years old when he tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident. The deadly crash happened at Kathithyamaa Bridge, located between Tala and Kangundo. Both riders involved in the head-on collision died on the spot.
What was meant to be a peaceful farewell on Saturday turned into chaos. A large group of boda boda riders and local youths stormed the burial and caused confusion and disorder.
Emotions ran high as mourners struggled to accept the sudden loss. The grieving family watched in shock as dramatic scenes unfolded during the ceremony.
Local authorities have not yet issued an official statement about the incident. Meanwhile, the community continues to wrestle with the tragedy and the unrest that disrupted the final send-off.
A burial in Masewani Village, Kangundo, took a tragic turn, leaving Leonard Mutua Muema’s family in shock. Muema, also known as Mapetco, died in a deadly motorcycle crash. His funeral took place on Saturday, but unruly youths and boda boda riders disrupted the event.
Family secretary Mathew Munyaka described the incident as deeply disrespectful. The youths blared loud music, performed strange rituals, and even offered the deceased beer and bhang. Munyaka called on the government to act swiftly, insisting that every family deserves a dignified and peaceful burial.
Administration concerns
Maiuni Sub-location Senior Assistant Chief, Consolata Ndunge, confirmed that chaos erupted at the gravesite. She said over 3,000 youths took over the burial ceremony, opened the casket, and insisted on performing their own rites. She warned that the government will not allow such behavior in Kangundo again.
Following the incident, Matungulu MP Stephen Mule strongly condemned the actions. He described them as immoral and completely opposed to both African culture and Christian values.
Adding to the heartbreak, the deceased’s father, Eric Muema, explained how the group disregarded funeral customs. They refused to use a trolley or table, carried the casket on their shoulders, and prevented the pastor from conducting the final prayers. He added that the youths placed beer, bhang, and cigarettes inside the coffin—an act that left the family devastated.
Pastor Stephen Kilisa, who had accompanied the family from the mortuary, called the funeral disturbing and traumatic. He noted that the youths even took over the road on the way to the village and performed bizarre rituals at the accident site.
Meanwhile, Zenna Kambua, the deceased’s eldest sister, said the family never witnessed the burial. The chaos forced them to retreat to their house, denying them a chance to say a proper goodbye. source citizen
